Robert Holbrrok Smith and Anne Ripley first met in Vermont in 1898. It took 17 years of courtship before they were married on January 25, 1915. Anne Smith is widely referred to as the “Mother of AA.” Their home was the central location for the beginning of AA with Dr. Bob and Bill bringing back suffering Alcoholics to the house to work with.
Here is our only known recording of Anne Smith’s voice. It is a wire recording message to Bill Wilson that features Anne, Dr. Bob, their son Smitty and his wife Betty. This took place in Anne’s bedroom shortly after a surgery in 1947.
